In 1945 Clyde N. Shafer returned from the war and assumed the responsibilities of the monument works.  He and his wife Norma Jean (Torbet) operated the business until 1969, when Clyde died of a heart attack while deer hunting in the Black Hills with his two sons.  They had changed the name of the business from Shafer Monument Works to C.N. Shafer Memorials.

Norma retired from the business to raise her daughter, Rebecca and son, Michael.

Gary Shafer & his wife, Kay took over the operation of the family owned business in 1971.
